Undercover
Someone here is bluffing.

Two words. One very good poker face. Describe your secret, read your friends, and find the undercover.

♧ 4–12 players◷ About 10–20 min✦ Free · No account
01

Your phone is your secret card

4–12 players join one room on their own phones. Internet is required; no account or download. Play in person, or use a separate voice call with remote friends.

02

Read your word. Keep it secret.

There is 1 undercover among 4–7 players, or 2 among 8–12. Civilians share one word; undercovers receive a similar word. You see your word but not your team. The host cannot see anyone else’s word.

03

Take turns describing

Once everyone confirms their word, describe it in one sentence when prompted. Do not say the word, translate it, or use a sound-alike clue. Speak in person: the game does not record audio. Tap “I’m done” afterwards. If someone drops, the host can skip their word check or their turn to speak.

04

Vote in secret

Every surviving player votes for a suspect other than themselves. Votes cannot be changed after submission and remain private until voting ends. Results are counted once everyone votes or the timer ends; missing votes count as abstentions.

05

Ties and elimination

A unique top-voted player is eliminated. Their team, but not their word, is revealed. A first tie triggers one runoff between the tied players. Another tie or no votes means no elimination. The starting speaker rotates each round.

06

Who wins?

Civilians win when all undercovers are eliminated. Undercovers win when surviving undercovers are at least as numerous as surviving civilians. All words and teams are revealed at the end. Everyone on the winning team, including eliminated players, earns a win. The host can return to the lobby for another game.

07

Reconnect to your seat

Refresh in the same browser to reconnect. A new tab for the same seat takes over from the old one. An online player becomes host after the host is offline for 30 seconds. If someone drops during a vote, the countdown pauses until they are back; the host can also skip them, which counts as abstaining. Seats cannot join or leave during a game; the host may end the game and return everyone to the lobby.

08

Shared screen, sound and new phones

With a TV, projector or computer, the host can open “Shared screen” from the menu. It shows seats, speaking order, voting progress, the vote count and results, never anyone’s word. Phones then default to just your word and buttons, with the full table a tap away; without a screen, every phone shows the full table and can play a whole game. Sound effects and background music are on by default and adjustable in the menu; music plays only on the screen or the host’s phone. To switch phones, choose “Change device” on the old one and use the one-time code within 10 minutes. If the old phone is gone, join the same room with the same name to get your seat back.

09

Rooms and privacy

Rooms expire 24 hours after their last game action. Your browser stores your nickname, language and a reconnect credential; the server stores nicknames and temporary game state, and only hashes of screen and transfer codes. No chat, advertising, or payments. Leave your seat before handing over a shared device.

Undercover: an icebreaker word game for small groups

Break the ice with new teammates, warm up a team dinner or gather friends for a word game. 4–12 people join one room by QR; the website deals words and runs voting while you take turns giving clues.

How do first-time players start?

One person creates a room and the others scan a QR code or enter its code. With at least 4 players, the host starts. Read your secret word, then take turns giving clues in the order shown. Read the full rules together before your first round.

What do we need for a no-prop icebreaker?

Each person needs a connected phone. Word cards and voting are on the website, so no paper, cards, accounts or downloads. Sit together and talk, or use a separate voice call with remote friends.

Can we put the game on a TV or projector?

Yes. The host opens “Shared screen” in the phone menu and opens the link on a TV, projector or computer browser. The screen shows seats, speaking order, voting progress and the vote count, never anyone’s word, while phones keep just your word and buttons. You can always play without one.

What if a phone dies mid-game?

Reopen the page in the same browser to get your seat back. To switch phones, choose “Change device” on the old one, then scan the code or enter it on the new phone to keep your word and team. If the old phone is gone, join the same room with the same name on the new one.
